Lot Essay

The distinctive tassled design of the back appears on a chair at Charlton House, Kent (illustrated in situ in the Saloon in H.A.Tipping, ed., English Homes of the Early Renaissance, London, n.d. (c.1912), p.403). An armchair from the collection of C.D.Rotch, Esq., and a further set of chairs with Messrs. Gill and Reigate, are illustrated in H. Cescinsky, The Old-World House, London, 1924, vol.II, pp.70-71. A further set of seven chairs was sold Sotheby's London, 25 April 1986, lot 27.
