A PAIR OF GEORGE II MAHOGANY LIBRARY OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Each with a serpentine-crested rectangular padded back, armrests and seat, one covered in ivory patterned material, the other covered in lime foliate damask, with channelled scrolled arm terminals and supports, on fluted cabriole legs headed by acanthus, on scrolled feet, one chair with brass and leather castors, the other chair previously with castors, one chair inscribed in pencil 'Salon', both chairs with later blocks, one back foot replaced, variations in surface condition (2)
Provenance
Supplied to Charles, 5th Duke of Bolton (d.1765) for Hackwood, Hampshire.
By descent until sold in 1935 with Hackwood to
William Berry, 1st Viscount Camrose (d.1954) and by descent.
Sale room notice
Some of the inconsistencies in the seat-rails suggests that there may be some re-railing to these chairs, although the presence of the inventory inscription on both back rails on lot 74, suggests that this was done prior to 1813. If so, any re-railing may have been done by Gillows of Lancaster who were paid for similar work in 1813.
