Lot Essay

This was the first of Rietveld's designs to be mass-produced, first by Van de Groenekan and then Metz & Co.. He elaborated this basic form in many ways, reducing the size, including perforations, adding arms and employing different materials. The later editions were strengthened by larger support wedges and metal bolts.
The greater number of dovetail joints at the base of the backrest denote this chair as an early example.
