The scenes are taken from the five-year war between the Taira (or Heike) clan and the Minamoto (or Genji) clan at the end of the 12th Century. The war was eventually won by the Minamoto clan and the whole episode was written down in the Heike Monogatari, which has become a historical novel since the 13th Century.
