Lot Essay

In an unpublished typescript Randonne en A.O.F., the artist describes her visit to Gaoua. "Here are the Lobis, the most beautiful black race one could imagine. The men, above all, tall, handsome, are splendid. Very virile, these warriors are always at war, or in vendetta, with their neighbours...The men, their bows and arrows always to hand, wear a monkey- or wild cat fur thrown over their shoulders, three or four leather belts, cowry-shells on their ankles, gold earrings, and a tail of fabric or a horsetail behind".
