Lot Essay

We are very grateful to Mrs. Hazel Dolling for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.

The reviewer for The Irish Times, commented on the present work: 'Above hangs Mr. Staples' Guilty or not Guilty, an extremely clever picture, abounding in admirable touches ... It is a scene in a juryroom. The effort has been made to crowd twelve figures into the canvas ... Those in the foregroud are excellent, but those that are crushed into the background fail ... and it is a pity, for it contains the leading elements of an admirable composition'.
