De acuerdo con las metamrfosis de Ovidio, Teseo se detuvo a las orillas del ro Acheolus a la vuelta de la caza del jabal de Caledonia. Una vez all el ya mencionado dis del ro le entretuvo con un banquete. Esta composicin difiere del original, posiblemente por respeto a su mecenas, el artista cubri a las figuras con ropajes.

According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, Theseus stopped at the banks of the river Achelous on his return from hunting the Calydonian boar. There, the eponymous river-god entertained him at a banquet. The present composition differs from the original, in that the artist, presumably in deference to his patron's modesty, has clothed the figures.
