ALLARD, Hugo. Totius Neobelgii Nova et accuratissima Tabula. [Amsterdam: c. 1680].

Engraved map of the Northeast Seaboard of North America, 514 x 618mm. The map extending from Chesapeake Bay to the coast of New England, with an inset map of New Amsterdam, legend, surmounted by an allegorical group of settlers and natives, decorated with birds and beasts and views of two native settlements, compass-roses, rhumb-lines, sand banks and rocks indicated, the seas decorated with canoes. (Dampstaining to upper margin affecting upper border, some light discolouration to edges, remains of old guard on verso.)

A fine clear impression of this fine map of the Northeastern seaboard of America. Hugo Allard first issued this map in about 1662. The present map is evidence that much of Hugo's stock passed into the hands of his son Carel (1648-1725) well before the former's death in 1691. In this issue of the map Carel has substituted his name for his father's in the imprint. The map was later issued by Ottens. The inset view of New Amsterdam, based on an earlier version by Visscher, was a celebration of the restitution of the city to the Dutch after its liberation in 1673 under the command of Cornelius Evertsen, whose fleet can be seen off the coast of Long Island. Burden 373, fourth state.
