DRESSER, Henry Eeles (1838-1915). A Monograph of the Coraciidae, or Family of the Rollers. Farnborough, Kent: published by the author [printed by Taylor and Francis], 1893.
Large 4 (378 x 282mm). Wood-engraved title vignette, 27 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after J. G. Keulemans, printed by Hanhart. (Slight creasing of plates at upper inner margin, synonyms written in pencil at upper margin of each plate.) Contemporary crimson half morocco, t.e.g. (joints slightly split at head).
FIRST EDITION of the companion volume to the author's Monograph of the Meropidae, 1884-1886, with notes on the anatomy and osteology again by Frank E. Beddard. Like the Bee-Eater, the Roller, a beautiful though solitary forest-haunting bird, is largely restricted to the Ethiopian region. Out of the 26 species identified by Dresser, 18 were inhabitants of the region, and 17 peculiar to it. Fine Bird Books p. 72; Nissen IVB 270; Wood p. 324; Zimmer p. 178: 'a thoroughly detailed study of the group with excellent hand-coloured plates.'
