LORD, Thomas (d. 1796). Lord's Entire New System of Ornithology or Oecumenical History of British Birds ... the writing corrected and embellish'd by the Revd. Dr. Dupree. London: T. Lord, [1791-1796].
2 (420 x 268mm). 100 hand-coloured engraved plates only (of 114) by and after Lord, engraved title with vignette of a song bird, contemporary manuscript list of plates on verso of dedication. (Title soiled, some leaves with deep repaired tears, occasional marginal soiling and spotting, lacking the text leaves to the missing plates, and to plate 83.) Modern brown morocco, gilt-ruled and lettered, gilt edges. Provenance: J. F. Symons-Jeune (bookplate).
A RARE AND CURIOUS WORK. Thomas Lord was a proteg of the Rev. Matthew William Peters, R. A., chaplain to the Prince of Wales, and his descriptive text was revised by another clergyman, Dr. Dupree, master of Berkhampstead Grammar School. The work was issued in 38 parts, containing 3 plates and 3 sheets of description in each, but is seldom found complete. This copy lacks plates 23, 25, 37-39, 43-45, 70-72, and 103-105. Many of the plates include the nests and eggs of the birds figured, and possess great charm if little accuracy. Fine Bird Books p. 91; Mullens and Swann p. 358; Nissen IVB 572; Wood p. 441: 'an extremely scarce but scientifically unreliable work'.
