4 (313 x 242mm). 55 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after J. G. Keulemans, printed by Hanhart, wood-engraved title vignette and anatomical figures. (Light spotting affecting title, a few text leaves and index.) Contemporary brown moroocco gilt by Francis Bedford, spine in six compartments, raised bands, lettered in two and dated at foot, the remaining compartments with repeated tool of a bird perched on a flower stem surrounded by asem dots, stars and flowers (recased, with new endpapers), gilt edges.

This 'complete monograph' is an extension of the author's earlier work on the two groups separately published in 1852 (Jacamars) and 1856 (Puff-birds). It includes synoptic tables for the determination of genera and species, and a seven-page bibliography. Anker 451 'The special part of the work contains detailed synonymies, descriptions, information about geographical distribution and other facts relating to altogether 62 forms, 60 of which are figured on the beautiful plates.'
