CALENDAR LEAVES WITH MINIATURES, a complete Calendar from a Book of Hours, in French, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

[France, c.1500]
177 x 112mm. Six leaves, each with two months with the feasts written in two columns of 17 lines in gold, red and blue, in the upper border a miniature of the appropriate labour of the month, the outer and lower border with a continuous landscape scene.

It is an attractive and unusual feature of these leaves that whereas the scenes in the upper border are the customary activities, the landscape shown in the border from month to month marks the sequence of the seasons. Although sometimes there are zodiac signs in the lower border more often they are enlivened by animals - monkeys, cats, dogs or pigs - playing or pursuing one another.
