APIANUS, Petrus (1495-1552). Cosmographia. Edited by Gemma Frisius. Cologne: heirs of Arnold Birckman, 1574.

4 (203 x 150mm). Collation: A-H4 K-S4. Large woodcut of a globe on title, numerous astronomical and geographical woodcuts in the text, folding map of the world, volvelles attached to C2v, C3v, D1r, H2r and O3r. (Stamps removed from title with resultant small holes, occasional light dampstains, tables just shaved.) Modern stiff vellum wrappers.

The Cosmographia was one of the most popular geographical texts of its time. Based on Ptolemy, it treats of cosmography, geography and chorography and is well-illustrated with maps and diagrams. It also deals with measurement, surveying and weather. THE PRESENT COPY CONTAINS AN EXTRA VOLVELLE (on C3v) not recorded by JCB, and the 'charta cosmographica' is a separate folding woodcut (JCB describes it on 30v). At Antwerp in the same year several editions were published, also by the Birckmann heirs, by Plantin (with collation identical to the present copy), and others. They too contain at most 4 volvelles (cf. Adams A-1282-1284). John Carter Brown Cat. I, p.251; Sabin 1750 (calling for 58 foliated leaves); not in Adams.
