Additional engraved allegorical title by 'Io.Frans Cents' after 'Mucns Cents', letterpress half-title, woodcut and type-ornament head- and tailpieces, ornamental and historiated initials. (Engraved title slightly frayed and with repaired tear, some light browning, repaired tear in fo. S2.) Modern half calf. Provenance: portrait stamp on half-title; Pierantonio Rosetti (title inscription dated 1814).
FIRST EDITION. Scannelli's treatise, a reaction to Vasari, challenges Florentine art as pre-eminent and elevates 'the Lombard-Emilian school, led by Correggio, seeing in it an ideal synthesis of the finest achievments of the Venetian (Titian) and of the Roman-Tuscan (Raphael) schools' (Dictionary of Art). The work is dedicated to Francesco d'Este, Duke of Modena, whom Scannelli served as physician. A large, uncut copy. Cicognara 204.
