Lot Essay

Enhanced by a picturesque natural setting, and 'healing' mineral springs, Scarborough was a fashionable spa resort throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The town enjoyed the seasonal patronage of many famous residents, including the artists Frederic Leighton and John Atkinson Grimshaw. In our picture Morgan captures the essence of an Edwardian summer holiday by the sea.
