Lot Essay

A portrait of the actress, Gwen ffrangcon-Davies, who Sickert painted throughout the 1930s, often in costume from photographs in her photograph album. Her most famous role was that of Florence Nightingale in the 1929 production of The Lady with the Lamp, which toured the country.
