Chteau Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1959
Pauillac, 1er cru class. Chteau-bottled
Bin-soiled label, slight tears. Levels: three top, two upper, three mid/low and four low-shoulder
Despite the off-putting hype: "the vintage of the century", the more one is exposed to the '59s, the more one is inclined to agree that it certainly warrants high billing; and Lafite is, unquestionably, magnificent. Coincidentally my most recent note is of a bottle from my own cellar served at a Bordeaux Club dinner I hosted at Christie's in January 1996. It was voted by critical members perfection. MB
