Lot Essay

The cabinets, with their Egyptian reeded ornament and pilasters, embellished with voluted trusses at either end, and their stump feet, relate to a pair of bookcases supplied around 1805 for Penicuik House, Scotland and attributed to the Edinburgh firm of Young, Trotter and Hamilton (see F. Bamford, Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pl.74).
