The closest design is one by John Linnell for Lord Ducey in 1773 incorporating the same pattern of early 18th Century glass. These drawings were acquired by the V & A in 1920. However, the outer border of alternating palms and acanthus does not appear to be a Linnell feature. Elements can be traced to Adam's Syon House pier glass published in 1822, which is accompanied by Adam's Bute design showing husks festooned over the glass.
In conclusion we feel that it may be 19th Century and not 18th Century. Provenance: The Late Winnafreda, Countess of Portarlington, Earlywood, Ascot, Berkshire, Christie's South Kensington house sale, 21-22 September 1976, lot 1411.
