Lot Essay

The chairs' 'Athenienne' splats, like antique bronze tripods, relate to patterns after the style of James Wyatt (d. 1813) referred to as 'lozenge' patterns in Gillows of London and Lancaster's 1792, Estimate Sketch Book and also in their chair pattern books (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, fig. 280 and I. Hall, 'Patterns of Elegance', Country Life, 8 June 1978, fig. 2).
