Lot Essay

A smaller version of the present picture, with slight variations, now in the Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, is also dated 1852. The Glasgow picture, measuring 17 x 23 inches, depicts a similar scene, with a single white horse bearing a red deer, and a seated ghillie with a deerhound. Another, almost identical, version of the present picture (now in the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is signed and dated 1857. A faint squaring up of the canvas is apparent in the present picture which may suggest that the artist may have intended to produce a larger canvas of this successful subject.
