A MOST UNUSUAL TATAMI [FOLDING] HELMET
Edo Period (19th Century)
The iron bowl lightly lacquered with sabi nuri [lacquer imitating rusty iron] made in the style of a conventional sixteen plate suji bachi [ridged bowl] surmounted by a simple iron tehen kanamono and fitted with an iron kasa jirushi no kwan [a ring at the rear of the helmet], the interior is fitted with vertical and horizontal hinges that allow the bowl to collapse inwards in four sections when the knob on the top is released, mounted with a black lacquered iron close fitting neckguard [hineno jikoro] laced with dark blue spaced lacing
