GO MAI TATEHAGI OKEGAWA DO TOSEI GUSOKU

The sixty-two plates russet iron suji bachi [ridged bowl] signed Yoshihisa, leather covered peak with gilded copper fukurin and kanamono [metal moumts], the rare mayedate [fore crest, see illustration p. ????? ] in gilded copper and shakudo of the moon and clouds, enclosed within is a three case inro of gilded copper signed Fujiwara Naonori with kao, black lacquered three lame small rounded neckguard [ko manju jikoro] of false lamellae [hon kozane]; the cuirass [do] of very large proportion constructed in five sections of vertical plates with large standing rivets, all the surfaces heavily decorated in silver and gold nunome zogan on the front kannon amidst dragons and clouds, on the back dragons and clouds; shoulder guards of black lacquered false lamellae [kiritsuke kozan] of medium size but in the style of the larger o-sode; fine quality tsutsu gote [sleeves] in russet iron, the hand and upper arm defences overlaid with sukashi mon designs, thigh guards of black lacquered hexagonal leather plates in mail, russet iron tsutsu suneate [shin guards] and a pair of fur boots, the whole armour laced in dark blue close lacing; with a certificate from The Institute of Japanese Armour Research and Conservation dated 1975 stating that the armour is a very important example

Lot Essay

There were number of Myochin smiths who used the name Yoshihisa from Momoyama until late Edo. From the mounting of the helmet and other indications it would be appear that this man was one of the earlier makers.
