by Georges-Antoine Croze (fl. 1777-1790), marked, Paris 1777/1778, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache, the flange engraved with retailer's name "Du petit Dunkerque"
Circular bonbonnire, the independent cover, sides and base enamelled in translucent deep pink on a guilloch ground within borders of opaque green enamel dots surrounded by narrow opaque white enamel stripes, the lid inset with a circular miniature of a young lady called Madame Dubarry, in white dress and with pink cloak around her shoulders, holding a basket of flowers, the base enclosing a circular glazed panel of blonde hair

Lot Essay

A handwritten old label inside the box identifies the sitter of the miniature as King Louis XV's notorious mistress the Countess du Barry (1741-1793) and reads "La Contesse [sic] du Barry donne par elle meme a Louvecienne 1781 ou 82".
