The circular enamelled dial with Roman and Arabic chapters, inscribed 'Balthazar/Paris', with pierced foliate hands within an arched case surmounted by a putto cresting, on outsplayed feet headed by female busts and centred by a maiden with an eagle, on a conforming bracket, the corners headed by rams' masks and on a tapering base terminating in an acanthus finial

Lot Essay

This Cupid-crowned clock is embellished with a love-trophy bas-relief, derived from Ovid's Metamorphoses or 'Loves of the Gods' and celebrating Bacchus's birth, and depicting Jupiter's eagle with Semele, seated on a lambrequined couch.
