In 1992, Boetti conceived an exhibition of 50 kilims in which 50 different French art colleges would give their own interpretation of a system he had invented.
This kilim's pattern is the version that the students of the Ecole Rgionale Suprieure d'Expression Plastique de Tourcoing have given of the scheme.
Weaved in Peshawar, Pakistan, from a design imagined in Rome and conceived in France, finally displayed with the 49 other versions in Grenoble, this piece has travelled the world to give birth to the theme of "Alternating From One to One Hundred and Vice Versa".
The artist has described the pattern: "Among the 100 squares of 100 smaller squares, one can imagine 50 pairs that count the same sum of white and black: 1-99 with 99-1; 2-98 with 98-2; 3-97 with 97-3. The members of the pair are like two people who fall in love. Starting out from a periphery of strong contrasts, they make a date at the center, where even philosophies say that opposites are reconciled. But in the area where their respective diversities balance each other out and the dialogue is transformed into a soft, even murmur-suddenly, at the forty-ninth passage, fate ends its run, and the difference and distance between the lovers comes back to separate them." (In: 'Alighiero E Boetti: De Bouche Oreille', Grenoble 1993.)
