Lot Essay

The most complete of three drawings dated 14 July 1937 depicting the same subject, the present work is one of the final realisations of Gonzlez's largest and most ambitious sculpture Femme au Miroir.
Shaded and molded with coloured crayons into a convincing illusion of three dimensionality, Abstrait is not only the most fully resolved of many drawings Gonzlez executed in preparation for this remarkable figure, but also the work that bears the closest resemblance to the finished sculpture. Only a few minor details have been changed in the final iron construction; the angle at which the mirror is held and the bow that is tied around the woman's waist are the only notable differences. At the precise articulation of these details also does not appear in any other of the other sketches Gonzlez made for this highly important work, it can be assumed that these were details Gonzlez altered while in the process of making the sculpture. In this respect the present work can be regarded as the final blueprint for the grandest of his constructed iron sculptures.
