Lot Essay

In 1880 Sisley moved to the area of Moret-sur-Loing, at that time around two hours south of Paris, where, situated at the confluence of the Loing and the Seine, he found a wealth of material for his subsequent career. In the late 1880s, when he began to turn to pastel as a fresh and immediate method of rendering landscape - as Pissarro, Monet and Guillaumin had done before him - Sisley found countless local motifs upon which to exercise his quickly found mastery of the medium.

The present work depicts the Canal du Loing just before it enters the Seine and where its level is still controlled by locks. Related oils include Saint Mamms: Canal du Loing of 1885 in the Cleveland Museum of Art (D.615).

Sold with a photo-certificate from Franois Daulte dated Lausanne, le 9 janvier 1985.
