Lot Essay

Another version of the same subject is in the University Art Museum, Princeton, F.L. Richardson, Andrea Schiavone, Oxford, 1980, no. 198. The grief-stricken earth was barren for the four months of the year that Proserpina was away, the flowers of Spring heralding her return.
