Lot Essay

Comparable to drawings by Antoine Dieu illustrated in P. Rosenberg, 'Dieu as a Draughtsman', Master Drawings, 1979, XVII, pp. 161-9, pls. 33-47. Dieu was active in Paris as a painter, although only three pictures are now extant, and as a draughtsman and picture dealer. His shop was called Au grand monarque and was on the Petit-Pont. Pierre-Jean Mariette commented in the Abcdario that 'son extrme facilit de dessiner lui a mis presque continuellement la plume la main'.
