Lot Essay

George Smith, upholsterer to the Prince of Wales, later George IV, published a related design for a Regency 'Drawing Room Sofa' in his Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1826, pl. CXXXVII.
A similar mahogany sofa, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and probably supplied by them for Beamish Park, Co. Durham, was sold by Mrs. R.D. Shafto, in these Rooms, 21 September 1995, lot 173. Another similar sofa was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 26 September 1997, lot 163.
