GIOVANELLI, Pietro (fl. mid-16th century). Cantus Novi Thesauri Musici, Liber Primus [-Quintus]. Venice: Antonio Gardano, 1568.
5 parts in one volume, 4 (245 x 172mm). Title-page to each part with woodcut architectural frame, large woodcut coats-of-arms of the dedicatees, woodcut portrait of Emperor Ferdinand I, printed music, woodcut historiated initials. (Occasional light spotting and staining, small wormtrack in first few leaves.) Contemporary Italian red-brown goatskin tooled in gilt and blind, sides with wide fillet border and corner ornaments, small ornament and date obscured on front cover, the painted arms of Cardinal Madrutz added c.1600 to both covers, gilt ornament in spine compartments, gilt edges, missing 4 fore-edge ties (lightly rubbed, expert repairs at corners, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Cardinal Karl Madrutz, Bishop of Trent (1562-1629, binding).
FIRST EDITION of this important anthology. It contains works by Jacob Regnart, Jacobus Vaet, Matthias Zaphelius, Michel-Charles des Buisson, Henri de la Court and others, representing the only survival of some of their compositions and providing a wide picture of music, particularly as favoured at the Habsburg court, in the middle of the 16th century. The Rothschild copy bears the arms of Karl Madrutz, one of a long line of Madrutz family members who held the bishopric of Trent. Karl succeeded his uncle, Cardinal Ludwig Madrutz, as Bishop of Trent on his uncle's death in 1600. It was presumably in honour of his uncle that a motet, written by Michael Deiss and set by Jean de Chayne on the death of Ferdinand I, was altered in this copy, the name of Ferdinand replaced by that of Ludwig written on small slips pasted in. Adams J-217.
