A 12-BORE GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK MUSKET
Circa 1600 and later
With blued two-stage barrel (probably shortened) with an applied decorative brass ring at the muzzle, the breech section inlaid with an engraved circular panel within a circular brass wreath, struck thrice at the rear with a brass-lined maker's mark, 'MM' above a lion within a shield, and with two raised mouldings, one of brass, flat lock struck with the same mark and with external wheel retained by two blued brackets each with scallop-shaped finial, blued pan and pan-cover, engraved blued cock with baluster stem, full stock inlaid with horn lines enclosing engraved mother-of-pearl panels on a background of staghorn scrolls, pellets and rosettes, the butt carved in the form of a monster's head with staghorn eyes, iron trigger-guard, set trigger, engraved staghorn ramrod-pipes, engraved horn fore-end cap, and horn-tipped ramrod (incomplete)
