Lot Essay
Neither Dr. Edmund Pillsbury (oral communication, 13 May 1999) nor Professor Andrea Emiliani (oral communication, 14 May 1999), judging from photographs, believe this to be by Barocci; but neither could suggest an alternative attribution for this striking portrait, executed on an Italian or south European support. Burchard presumably acquired it because of its very Barocciesque character and manner of execution, reminiscent of the style of the young Rubens in Italy. For Rubens's interest in the art of Barocci, see M. Jaff, Rubens and Italy, Oxford, 1977, pp. 52 and 53.
