A Rapier
Early 17th Century, probably German
With double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with inscribed central fuller on each face of the forte, the ricasso struck with a mark on one side and 'Caino' on each side, iron hilt with guard of slender bars with downcurved rear quillon, arms linked on each side by a half-ring, the inner ring small and downturned, the outer ring larger and set between two upturned bars, curved diagonal bar linking the tip of the rear arm to the tip of the open knuckle-guard, flattened trapezoid-shaped pommel with medial ridge on each face, and wire-bound wooden grip (some pitting throughout)

Lot Essay

This relates to a well known group of swords with fish-tail pommels of which many examples are preserved at Schlo Ambras near Innsbruck. See A.V.B. Norman, The Rapier and Small-Sword, 1460-1820, p. 88. For the inscription 'Caino' see the footnote to the preceding lot.
