Clos de la Coule de Serrant--Vintage 1984
Loire. Domaine-bottled: Madame Joly
The tiny appellation of Savennieres lies just South west of the town of Angers. Annual production for the whole appelation is just 30,000 cases. In this part of the Loire the Chenin Blanc grape is used to produce dry or off-dry wines, the best of which display a stunning balance of nerve and concentration. The Clos de la Coule de Serrant is a 7 hectare vineyard run by the Joly family on biodynamic lines. No fertilisers, artificial pesticides or modern technolgical equipment are used. The resulting wine has an extraordinary intensity and longevity (Chenin Blanc's high acidity allows the best wines to keep and develop for several decades).
