Lot Essay
The tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton made five unsuccessful challenges for the America's Cup, the last of which was in 1930. Each time using a new boat, all of them named Shamrock, the fifth was designed and built by Camper & Nicholdon at Gosport and displaced 134 tons. Carrying 7,540 square feet of sail, she seemed more than a match for the slightly lighter Enterprise, owned by a syndicate and built by Herreshoff, which the New York Yacht Club had chosen to rebuff the challenger. In the event, Enterprise won three of the races and since Shamrock (V) failed to finish in the fourth, the American was declared the winner.
