Autograph letter signed ("Garnet") to "My dearest Mother", from Balaclava, 2 1/2pp., 8, 29 May 1850 and 3 June 1950 (tear along crease to third page and other small tears). Giving news. He describes extremely strong winds: "The flagstaff which you may see in some of my sketches as represented standing on the top of the highest Genovese tower of Balaclava has just been broken". Describing a day off: "I went with a large party to the River Alma...the coast is very pretty in some places...from the mouth of the river to the right of the Russian position is a distance of about four miles".
