Lot Essay
This leaf comes from one of several albums made in the late 18th century in imitation of the albums prepared for Jahangir and Shah Jehan of the previous century. The borders with their lively genre scenes and animal studies link this group together. The miniatures are an eclectic mixture of Hindu and Muslim subjects.(Leach, L.:Mughal and other Indian paintingsfrom the Chester Beatty Library, London, 1995, pp. 666-7.)
The present lot includes a portrait of the founder of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak within the border detail.
Three similar miniatures with elaborate margins with genre scenes from an album put together in 1770 in Oudh were offered in these rooms, 26 April 1994, lots 5, 8 and 10.
