Lot Essay
This history of Sultan Mas'ud of Ghazna (AD 1030 - 40) is part of a larger work. The author was a secretary of state during Shah Mas'ud's reign, and enjoyed a close relationship with the Sultan. This is a rambling but acute account of court life by a man in close contact with the sovereign.
The calligrapher was invited from Herat to the court of Akbar by Khan Khanan 'Abd al-Rahim (AD 1556-1627), a great connoisseur of calligraphy. He later joined the court of Jahangir. Notes on the flyleaf indicate that this copy was prepared under the orders of the emperor Jahangir himself, and was later seen by both Shah Jehan and Aurangzeb.
