Gouache heightened with gold on paper, each leaf with a central small miniature of a blue robed angel against a ground of buff and gold floral meander, mounted on card with border composed of lines of black nasta'liq arranged horizontally and diagonally, light flaking and staining, later stippled margins

Lot Essay

These album leaves are composed of pieces from a fine Timurid book of long thin vertical format. For a comparable manuscript with similar typical stippled stencil borders incorporating animals (Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, 1960, pl.8).
