AN ABBASID TIN GLAZED BOWL

Of rounded form with flaring sides on short foot, the interior grey ground painted in cobalt-blue with the kufic inscription baraka (blessing) repeated twice, one above the other, four large emerald-green splashes around the rim spreading into the interior, the exterior plain grey, repaired clean breaks, the exterior with the trace of another vessel in the kiln, very slight silvery iridescence in the green glaze
5 7/8in. (15cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A bowl with identical cobalt-blue two-line inscription but without the green splashes, formerly in the Barlow Collection, is now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Fehérvári, G.: Islamic Pottery, A Comprehensive Study based on the Barlow Collection, London, 1973, no.12, p.44, pl.8b)
