A TUNISIAN POTTERY TILE PANEL
EARLY 18TH CENTURY
Comprising fifty tiles, together forming a design comprising a lower panel of two arches, the white ground of each containing a cusped medallion flanked by feathery leaves and surmounted by carnation sprays, the spandrels of the arches filled with scrolling floral motifs on a blue ground, in narrow yellow striped border, the upper panel depicting a stylised mosque resting on a floral panel, set within a horseshoe arch, the yellow ground spandrels containing scrolling floral motifs, the arch resting on floral part columns which flank the lower panel, outer border of small black tiles, slight damages

Lot Essay

A tile of very similar design also bearing an inscription with the name of the potter, "al-Khamiri" and the date AH 1122/1710-11 AD is in the Musée national des arts africains et océaniens in Paris (L'Islam dans les Collections Nationales, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1977, no.129, pp.92-3).
