Lot Essay

The first drawing was probably executed in Bengal, when Chinnery had, to a certain extent, turned his back on society portraiture to roam the countryside surrounding Calcutta and sketch the local people. He had arrived in India in 1802 to pursue a career as a portraitist but as one client noted 'He likes landscape painting a thousand to one better'. The second drawing is dated 1835 and was therefore executed in China, where Chinnery moved to in 1825 and remained for the rest of his life.
