Lot Essay

The inscription can be loosely translated: "even though this is the work of a [mere] mat weaver, he has been taken to a place where they work in silk", This rare early silk rug indicates clearly that high quality weaving was taking place in the Heriz region in established workshops in the early 19th century. The fact that the weaver of this lot was less used to working in silk, as indicated in the inscription couplet, is interesting to note. It is probable that weaving in silk in this area was not commonplace at that time.
