The field with a central tree issuing a variety of polychrome flowerheads, palmettes and leaves together with perching birds flanked by paired animals, the cusped light blue mihrab arch above containing mythological animals and delicate floral vine, a band of polychrome inscription cartouches and pictorial cartouches together with animal figures above and below, in a border of ivory and light blue pictorial cartouches linked by flowerheads and, at each side, paired lions and crown motifs, between blackcurrant red floral vine stripes, plain outer light blue stripe

Lot Essay

The inscriptions taken together read "made to the order of Hajji Muhamad Ja'far (?)Farshji".

This example differs from typical Souf Kashan prayer rugs; the colours used are more numerous and vibrant and the pile is left longer than one would normally expect. The structure of the outer stripe also shows an unusual feature, appearing to be woven entirely with jufti knotting. It is possible that this was woven in a Persian centre other than Kashan.
