Lot Essay

This rug was made as part of the celebrations of the foundation of the kingdom of Iraq after the First World War. The lower inscription contains the motto of the new kingdom, while the upper cartouche in the border proudly states that this rug was made in the prisons of Iraq. At some stage somebody has tried to overwrite 'prisons' with something more prosaic.
