Lot Essay

The above lot was reputedly given by Lady Manvers to her sister, Lady Stair, in 1815, and thence by decent to the present owner. Lady Manvers and Lady Stair were the daughters of the Duc de Coigny and his English wife (ne Dalrymple-Hamilton) who had both escaped from France during the Revolution.
It would appear that the later decoration of the present lot was added perhaps by the order of Lady Stair.
