Lot Essay

Elizabeth Barrett (1806-61) met Robert Browning (1812-89) in 1845 and they were married the following year. They settled in Pisa, and then Florence (1847) where their son Robert was born in 1849. They became the centre of a brilliant literary circle there.

The portrait of Lord Nelson is based on the picture by Abbott painted in 1797 when Nelson was a Rear Admiral.
