Lot Essay

In this peaceful image of fish swimming among lotus flowers in turqoise waters, the fish represent freedom of movement achived by those in Buddha-state.

The lotus flower, one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism and an emblem of purity furthers the Buddhist imagery.

Compare a cloisonn vase with similarly depicted fish illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Chinese Cloisonn: The Pierre Uldry Collection, New York, 1989, no. 338.
